“Everything we love about civilization is a product of intelligence, so
amplifying our human intelligence with the help of Artificial
Intelligence has the potential to help human society flourish like
never before” - Max Tegmark
What is A.I?
From Siri to self-driving cars, artificial intelligence (A.I) is
progressing rapidly. While science fiction portrays A.I as robots with human-like
characteristics, A.I can encompass anything from Google’s search algorithms and IBM’s
Watson (A question answering computer) to autonomous weapons. Artificial Intelligence
(AI) is bringing a drastic change in technological fields, where it can be implemented to
automate a system for more efficiency and performance.
How can A.I be dangerous?
It can be dangerous in various ways:
1) A.I can be programmed to do something dangerous: Autonomous weapons are
artificial intelligence systems that are designed to
kill.
2) Destructive methods to achieve its goal: This
happens when we fail to fully align the A.I’s goals
with ours, which is strikingly difficult. For
example, if a super-intelligent system is tasked
with an ambitious geo-engineering project, it may
wreak havoc with our ecosystem as a side effect, and it may view human attempts to
stop it as a threat.
