There are many types of mental illnesses, some of which are since birth of a child and the others are
developed due to situations and events faced by a person. Many mental illnesses can be cured but there
a few which cannot be cured but can be successfully controlled and this is done by trained, expert
counsellors and psychiatrists.
Counselling is the provision of professional assistance and guidance in resolving personal or
psychological problems. It is a process of helping and guiding people by a trained person on a
professional basis.
Facing any problem related to family, society, friendship, love, relationship, any kind of mental
disorders, depression, anxiety, behavioural problems, complexes, willingness of suicide, any kind of
phobias and all other conditions which are affecting the day to day life of a person needs to go to the
counsellor/psychologist.
Counselling doesn’t always mean to go for any abnormality while a counsellor can help a person
to improve his/her efficiency, can help to concentrate and focus to avail his target or goal. For example,
an average student in Maths subject can do better in exams after getting guidance of a counsellor. A
candidate can improve his/her performance in his/her interview after consulting a counsellor.
Changes in behaviour of your child – Understanding your child, requires a lot of work. Many a
times, your child insists on not going to school, gets angry or upset over minor issues, starts to interact
lesser, prefers to be left alone, stays sad and unexcited, often gets scared in his/her sleep, is lost in
thoughts for most of the day, then, this a warning sign and indicator of some sort of mental issue that the
child is facing and if left unattended and untreated, this problem could grow very quickly. These mental
disorders are of many types like Dyslexia, GAD, OCD, PTSD, ADHD, Autism, Panic disorder,
Somatoform disorders, Dissociative disorder, Personality disorder, Substance related disorder, Mood
disorders and for most of them, you, as a parent, can look up the symptoms yourself and find out
whether your child is showing any of them. In case he/she is, then you must rush to a professional
counsellor/psychologist immediately and seek advice to save future of your child.
